Operating under the Commission's Regional Services Division (RSD1), Pictou County Solid Waste Management System (PCSWMS) provides waste management services for the Towns of New Glasgow, Pictou, Stellarton, Westville and Trenton and the County of Pictou.

The PCSWMS operates the Mount William Landfill site and provides an integrated waste management system to all local municipalities. These services include:

· Landfill Disposal
· Recycling Collection (curbside)
· Compost Facility
· Waste Reduction Education
· Administrative Services for Refuse Collec tion

The landfill site at Mount William is a first generation site designed to operate until 2005. The recycling program involves the curbside collection of blue bags on a bi-weekly basis.

The PCSWMS opened a compost facility in 1999. The facility is designed to handle 5,000 tons of source separated organic material per year. Compost carts have been delivered to every home in Pictou County, and organic material collection service is provided on a bi-weekly basis. This service has recently been upgraded to include collection service to the County's many cottages during the summer months.

The PCSWMS conducts recycling education for the public, including presentations to schools and the business sector. This allows the SWMS to become a partner with the community in waste reduction.
