Pictou County has one of the higher per capita mileages of public roads in Nova Scotia. As illustrated in the map legend, roads in Pictou County are functionally classified as being Trans Canada (designated as the 100 series) Highway, Trunk Highway, Collector Highway and Local Road.

The 100 series highway system is characterized by controlled access high speed facilities designed to carry reigonal traffic. The principal highway of the county is the 104 Trans Canada highway. Highways from all points in the United States and Canada join the trans Canada Highway that enters Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Amherst. The county is easily accessible off the Trans Canada exits 19 through 29 and route 6 off the Sunrise Trail.

The bulk of the countys road network consists of secondary roads. Secondary roads are comprised of Trunk Highways and Collector Highways that serveto funnel traffic to and between primary highways and smaller communities. Local Roads are used primarily to service adjacent lands. This map only identifies those local units that are paved.
Many seconary roads, especially long ones, have names in addition to numbers. Sometimes a road has more than one colloquial name and often a road is most easily identified by the provincial highway that used to run along it. As a result this map identifies both the number AND name of roads where applicable.
